Our Story – Natural Resource Planning Services had its start in 1974 when two ambitious young men left the comfort of a regular paycheck and embarked upon a journey to establish a forestry and environmental services firm. At that time, forestry consulting was primarily offered through state forestry programs, but Jack Vogel and Tom Mastin saw the need to provide broader and more complete services than what the public sector and the very limited number of private firms were able to provide, especially in their home state of Florida. The early days saw Jack and Tom working long hours prescribed burning on large tracts like the Duda Ranch near Cocoa. They also administered an occasional thinning sale of timber, while slowly expanding services and clientele.
Business steadily grew as they were favored by some wonderful early clients – mostly ranchers and family tree farmers. Marketing was primarily word of mouth referrals. The company grew and eventually Jack and Tom hired several key early hires that became branch and operational managers. A couple of these, John Holzaepfel and Tony Wallace eventually joined the Board of Directors, and when Tom relocated full time to Georgia in 2012, became Jack’s new partners. From these humble beginnings, the NRPS family has now grown to about 30 strong.
To distinguish the comprehensive suite of services, separate divisions were launched in 2010. These include: Forestry Services, Legacy Wildlife Services, Legacy Arborist Services, and Realty Services, then in 2017, Environmental Services. Timberland real estate is handled via a partnership with Saunders Real Estate – under the banner of Saunders Real Estate – Forestry Group. NRPS also has a sister company, Legacy Appraisal Services, LLC that is managed by Scott Brodbeck and is a recognized leader in timberland appraisal in the southeast and globally.
