John was born in Sandusky, Ohio in 1959 and graduated from The University of Florida in the spring of 1982. John worked for nearly five years for the Florida Division of Forestry as a Forester Ranger & County Forester prior to joining NRPS in 1987. John remains active in classical and urban forest management, environmental land management, and real estate. John has served on numerous forestry boards and committees and received the SAF C. Huxley Coulter Award for Contributions to Forestry in 2004. Through the years, John has also been active in local community sports, schools, church, and more recently, 4H. John organized the All Creatures Great and Small 4H Club that was selected for new club and leadership awards during its first two years of existence.

John married Criss in 1981 and they have three teenage boys – Nathan, Aaron, and Benjamin.
